A quick note on this checklist, and all references to abundance codes: These were the codes I was working with in the fall of 2021 as I planned out my year. They have changed! Some birds have been reported more or less frequently, and these codes do change over time. Some may very likely change again after 2022. Either way, it is always fun to get out in the actual field and see how tough it is to find each species!

Needs List: Well, it's pretty long right now! Many of these birds will not be seen for months to come, but it's still fun to see some progress.
Code 1 Birds: 108 of 111 seen, 3 missed
These are the common birds, ostensibly, and I figure on finding all of them each year. Last year, Douglas stumped me on Bohemian Waxwings, but they are a fairly variable species from one year to the next! Rock Pigeon and Golden-crowned Kinglet held out until May, but finally showed up for me. I was pretty happy with 188 species for the year, but these missing three would have put me at 191. All were seen in the county during the year, although I might look this over and see if it's worth questioning their coding. Maybe not!
- Redhead
- Common Nighthawk
- Caspian Tern
Code 2 Birds: 53 of 60 seen, 7 missed
198 would have been the total for the year if I had only found all of the code 1 and code 2 birds. A number of these had me scratching my head! Chukar especially seemed to be a challenge, as I don't remember a great number of sightings of it during the year.
- Gray Partridge
- Chukar
- Long-billed Curlew
- Black-crowned Night Heron
- Western Screech-Owl
- Merlin
- American Pipit
Code 3 Birds: 18 seen of 36, 18 remaining
If I had found the rest of the Code 1, 2, and 3 birds, the total would have been 216 for the year. Generally, I expect to find about 80 percent of the code 3 birds in a year. I was on a pretty good pace for this at the start of the year! But life's hiccups definitely limited my trips to Klickitat, so I'm happy that I still found half of these.
- Greater White-fronted Goose
- Cackling Goose
- Blue-winged Teal
- Black-chinned Hummingbird
- Dunlin
- Western Sandpiper
- Bonaparte's Gull
- Short-billed Gull (on checklist as Mew Gull)
- Ferruginous Hawk
- Barn Owl
- Short-eared Owl
- Northern Saw-whet Owl
- White-headed Woodpecker
- Red-eyed Vireo
- Grasshopper Sparrow
- White-throated Sparrow
- American Redstart
- Hermit Warbler
Code 4 and 5 birds: 9 seen (Snow Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Eared Grebe, Swamp Sparrow, Great Egret, Hutton's Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Sage Thrasher, Barred Owl)
I'll likely pick up 10-12 of these during the year, but they are of course the most fun. I saw a few code 4 birds that I suspected might be seen annually with a little effort:
Flammulated Owl, Harlequin Duck, American Tree Sparrow, Great Egret, Canada Jay... these were all ones where I harbored some hope, and all were actually found during the year. Flammulated, goodness they are actually a code 5!
